International FLAT Day is October 7th

The very first “International FLAT Day” will premier on OCTOBER 7th, 2019! 🎉

“International FLAT Day” was created to celebrate going flat – to promote breast reconstruction awareness, to promote flat closure (breastless, chest wall reconstruction after mastectomy), to promote flat reconstruction as a valid choice, and to bring together the flat community in sisterhood! October is breast cancer awareness month, and the 7th is the “Day of Maat” – the Egyptian Goddess who represents TRUTH and JUSTICE.

The 7 principles of Maat are: Truth, Justice, Harmony, Balance, Order, Reciprocity, and Propriety. These principles really reflect the “heart” of the shared flat movement!

Why October 7th?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month… but also, the 7th is the day of the ancient Egyptian goddess Ma’at. She represents all that is right in the world: truth, justice, balance, order, harmony, propriety and reciprocity. Organizing principles to live by in advocacy and in life.

TRUTH – full disclosure of information

JUSTICE – respect for our informed choice

BALANCE – flat advocacy and breast cancer advocacy go hand in hand

ORDER – moving forward diligently, one step at a time

HARMONY – respect for the diversity of experiences of women in the flat community

PROPRIETY – the golden rule

RECIPROCITY – lifting each other up and amplifying each other’s voices

More Flat Resources!

WHO DID WE MISS?!

It was such a struggle to decide what resources to include in our limited brochure space for “Flat is Beautiful”. We ultimately decided that since we wanted to reach women facing the reconstructive decision (and secondarily, their surgeons), we would prioritize the resources these women would find the most useful.

So – we would like to give a shout out here, to a couple of folks in particular whose projects got edged out at the last cut and who are doing amazing work on behalf of the flat community!

Trine Amazon inspires all of us with her powerful and beautiful imagery!

EMPOWERHAUS and founder Emily Hopper for all of her innovative designs that redefine breast cancer awareness!

FLATTIES UNITE is a great support group full of powerhouse women and was only edged out because it’s focused on women who have already had their surgery rather than women still making their decision.

Juliet FitzPatrick of Blooming Cancer for your tireless work getting visibility for going flat!

And Kathy Bates and Tig Notaro are both bad-ass flat, loud and proud celebrities who have been an inspiration to so many of us!

Flat in Canada: Support and Advocacy is a great support group up north that will be featured in the second edition of the Flat is Beautiful brochure.

Full and Fair Disclosure

Going flat after a mastectomy is a beautiful and viable option. Breast cancer awareness includes knowing your options based on full and fair disclosure, and knowing what kinds of questions to ask the surgeon. Breast cancer awareness is women’s awareness and breast reconstruction awareness is part of that. A woman does not need breasts to be a whole woman. She needs awareness.
